Nvidia's CPU Play & Bhutan's BTC Bet

Opening Brief

Nvidia just made its boldest hardware move yet, unveiling Vera, a standalone CPU with 88 Arm cores designed to challenge Intel and AMD head-on. Bhutan handed part of its sovereign Bitcoin stack to a Canadian asset manager, marking the first time a state has outsourced active Bitcoin treasury management. The Coldcard cold-wallet exploit has now spread to 4,500 addresses with losses near 89 million dollars, and unlike the FTX aftermath, holders are actually moving coins back onto exchanges. And the SEC just froze Nasdaq's Bitcoin options approval after CME argued the whole thing belongs to the CFTC. Let's get into it.

Nvidia Vera CPU

Nvidia isn't just an AI GPU company anymore. This week they detailed Vera, their first standalone CPU, and it's a serious piece of silicon. 88 custom Armv9.2 cores called Olympus, 176 threads per superchip, a single monolithic die instead of the chiplet approach AMD and Intel have moved to, and a cache-coherent fabric pushing 3.4 terabytes per second. They're claiming up to 1.8x per-core performance over AMD's Epyc 9755, and 2.6x on graph traversal for agentic workloads. Those are Nvidia-picked benchmarks, so take them with the usual salt, but the direction is clear.

What's interesting is the strategy. Vera pairs with Rubin GPUs over NVLink-C2C at 1.8 terabytes per second bidirectional, giving Nvidia a fully vertical stack, CPU, GPU, interconnect, and now the DSX rack platform. They're not really trying to sell you a general-purpose server chip. They're trying to sell you an AI factory where every component is theirs.

And the deployments are already lining up. Naver, Nvidia, and Brookfield announced a 200 megawatt AI buildout in Korea at Naver's Sejong data center, scaling from 55 megawatts today with a long-term target of 1 gigawatt. Brookfield is putting up as much as 9 billion dollars, Nvidia about 1 billion in strategic equity into Naver, and the hardware is Blackwell plus Vera Rubin. On top of that, Ilya Sutskever's Safe Superintelligence signed a long-term partnership giving them access to Vera Rubin compute in exchange for Nvidia getting a window into SSI's alignment research.

The Rubin platform itself is roughly 5x Blackwell on inference and 3.5x on training, with claims of 10x lower token cost at the system level. But rack power is now measured in hundreds of kilowatts, which means liquid cooling, new electrical distribution, and the kind of capital only hyperscalers can front. Nvidia is quietly turning AI infrastructure into a game where you either buy the whole stack or you don't play.

Humanoids on the Factory Floor

The humanoid robot story shifted this week from demos to procurement. Renault started running Wandercraft's Calvin humanoid on its Douai tyre line, moving 12 to 15 kilogram tyre pairs at roughly four cycles per minute across an 8-hour night shift. Around 4,000 tyres per night, no fatigue, no breaks. Renault is planning 10 units on the floor by end of 2026 and scaling to 350 units across French and Spanish plants by end of 2027. Renault put 75 million dollars into Wandercraft last year, and now we're seeing what that check bought.

Figure AI's Figure 01 is now on live BMW production lines doing assembly assistance and quality inspection, no longer a pilot. Apptronik's Apollo is running warehouse tasks at GXO Logistics in the US, pallet moving, inventory scanning, sorting. Industry estimates put Figure 01 at 200 to 300 thousand dollars a unit, Apollo somewhere between 50 and 100 thousand.

And it's not just Western companies. In India, Sahara Robotics deployed 25 SaharaBot X1 units at a Pune logistics facility, with a 15% error rate reduction reported in the pilot. Unit price around 12.5 lakh rupees, roughly 15 thousand dollars. Addverb, another Indian firm, is pushing wheeled and legged humanoids and openly framing this as a race India can't afford to lose.

Here's the thing worth noting. For years the humanoid pitch was a fundraising deck, not a P&L line item. What changed in 2026 is that Renault has procurement targets, BMW has live deployments, and GXO has multi-shift data. The unit economics still don't fully close at 200K per robot, but they're getting closer, and the depreciation math for a machine that runs three shifts without benefits or turnover is finally starting to work. If Renault actually hits 350 units by end of 2027, that's a template every automaker in Europe will copy.

Sovereign Bitcoin Moves

Two very different sovereign Bitcoin stories this week. Bhutan's Gelephu Mindfulness City, that special administrative zone in the south, appointed Toronto-based 3iQ as the first institutional manager for a portion of its Bitcoin reserves. Up to 10,000 BTC were previously earmarked for Gelephu's long-term development. What's new is the shift from passive holding to active, mandated management, with 3iQ setting up a permanent local office and pitching Gelephu as an offshore digital asset hub for Asia.

This matters more than the size suggests. Bhutan mined most of its Bitcoin using hydropower, and Arkham data shows their holdings dropped from around 13,390 BTC in late 2024 to about 5,600 BTC by mid-2026, with over 237 million dollars moved out since January. So this isn't purely accumulation, it's active portfolio management by a sovereign. Handing that mandate to a regulated Canadian manager is a governance milestone. If it works, small states with mining-derived or seized BTC now have a template.

El Salvador is the counter-example. Their holdings are up to roughly 7,706 BTC, worth around 474 million dollars, making them the fifth-largest sovereign holder. Analysts think they could cross 1 billion by year-end if the daily buy continues. But there's a problem. Their 1.4 billion dollar IMF Extended Fund Facility, signed December 2024, explicitly prohibits voluntary public-sector BTC purchases. Yet the National Bitcoin Office kept announcing daily acquisitions through mid-2026. The government's position is that on-chain balance growth reflects wallet movements between government accounts, not new buying. The IMF's second review will have to reconcile that, and a mismatch could delay disbursements.

Meanwhile, Trump Media went the opposite direction, transferring another 2,628 BTC to Crypto.com. That brings their sales to 7,281 BTC over seven months, leaving 4,261 BTC on the balance sheet. So we have Bhutan professionalizing, El Salvador quietly stacking despite IMF terms, and a US corporate treasury unwinding. Three completely different playbooks, all valid depending on what you actually think Bitcoin is for.

Coldcard Exploit and Regulatory Turf War

The Coldcard vulnerability got worse this week. Galaxy Research flagged a third wave of sweeps tied to weak Coldcard-generated keys. The attacker is now going after smaller balances and changing how funds are aggregated on-chain. Total losses are approaching 89 million dollars across 4,500 addresses.

The behavioral response is genuinely surprising. After FTX collapsed in late 2022, everyone moved coins off exchanges into self-custody. Not your keys, not your coins. This time, smaller holders are doing the opposite, sending Bitcoin back to exchanges for safety. CryptoQuant flagged 39,600 BTC moved in sub-1 BTC transactions during the attack window, the biggest such move since FTX. That's a real shift. When self-custody hardware itself becomes the attack surface, the mental model breaks. Users are effectively saying they trust Coinbase more than they trust their own seed generation. That's not a great look for the self-custody movement, and it will absolutely be used by regulators pushing for more custodial oversight.

Speaking of which, the SEC froze Nasdaq PHLX's approval for QBTC, its cash-settled Bitcoin index options product. CME filed a jurisdictional challenge arguing that because Bitcoin is a commodity, options on its value belong to the CFTC, not the SEC. Nasdaq got conditional SEC approval back in May. Now the whole thing is on hold with a public comment window open until August 24. Either Nasdaq registers with the CFTC, or it redesigns QBTC to track a security like a spot Bitcoin ETF instead of Bitcoin directly.

This matters because it's the clearest test yet of who owns Bitcoin derivatives regulation in the US. The SEC and CFTC signed a joint memo earlier this year saying they'd coordinate, and the SEC added the NFA to a cross-agency oversight MOU in May. But when actual product approvals hit, the turf war reappears. Meanwhile the CFTC endorsed a Bitcoin-backed perpetual futures contract on Kalshi and gave Coinbase a no-action letter for similar instruments. So the CFTC is quietly winning the crypto derivatives lane while the SEC keeps getting boxed in. That has real implications for where the next generation of Bitcoin products actually gets listed.

Closing Thought

Here's the pattern worth watching. Nvidia is building a closed AI stack. Renault and BMW are locking in humanoid procurement. Bhutan is handing sovereign Bitcoin to a regulated manager. Every one of these stories is about institutions building moats. The open, permissionless era of anything, including Bitcoin custody, is quietly getting replaced by professionalized infrastructure with fewer entry points. Whether that's good or bad depends entirely on which side of the moat you're standing on.
